P2G Funded Partners

FUNDED PARTNERSHIP PROGRAMS

2014 Funded Projects:
After a series of site visits and meetings conducted in Israel in December 2014, the overall P2G Joint Steering Committee agreed to fund a series of projects out of ‘core’ funding dollars – dollars contributed by all of the partner federations. All figures are in US dollars and form part of Winnipeg’s overall commitment to Israel.  . All funded projects are thoroughly reviewed and vetted by the Israeli volunteers and JFC-UIA staff on the ground in Israel. The projects are funded through the three main categories – Capacity buildingYouth and Education, and Gesher Chai (living bridge). In addition to the agreed upon funding through the partnership, often different cities in the Partnership fund a specific project on their own.

Our dollars are highly leveraged and many of the projects receive significant government funding (thanks in large part to the work of JFC-UIA). Much of the funding we provide is short-term and designed to provide seed money for new initiatives.

YOUTH AND EDUCATION

1. Rape Crisis Centre $18,000 NEW
We fund aspects of the centre that specifically deal with prevention. For example, one very painful behavior is the lack of boundaries when it comes to social media (FB and WhatsApp especially).

2. Hafuch al Hafuch $20,000
Located  in the heart of Kiryat Shmona, the centre provides much needed assistance and support for at risk teens from the Former Soviet Union. Our funding is specifically for a full-time coordinator.

3. Embrace $10,000
Embrace takes place at the regional Tennis Centre located in Kiryat Shmona and is geared to 7th and 8th graders who are not regularly attending school. There is a learning centre on site that offers assistance with school work and mentoring along with extra curriculum workshops, musical activities and trips. This program keeps vulnerable children off the streets and provides them with hope and a structured framework.

4. Kav HaZinuk  $80,000
Kav HaZinuk offers a one of a kind, 10-year leadership development program from ages 15 to 25. The program operates in Israel's geographical and social periphery and includes leadership training; personal meetings – getting to know role models and mentors from different sectors; outdoor training – development of skills through management activities, athletic challenges and team work; and one-on-one coaching & leadership through action. Each participant, with one or two others, is obligated to develop and implement a programmatic outreach initiative to address a need in his or her region.

5. XLN 3D printer research station $20,000
The partnership is providing seed funding in a holistic regional and national success story to bring STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) education to the region. 5 years ago, 5 students in the region graduated high school in STEM; today more than 85 are expected to graduate in this track. Part of the plan is to create 6 different research stations in the region.  One of these stations is a community 3D printing lab that is open to small businesses and those interested in being part of the predicted 3rd industrial revolution. Typically, this type of cutting-edge technology has only been available in the center of the country, putting the periphery at a distinct disadvantage.

6. Academy in Town square $5,000
Aims to make accessible knowledge acquired in academia (Tel Hai College) to the masses. This innovative model allows programs to take place across the region in various community centres and has been extremely successful.

GESHER CHAI

Friends Across the Sea $16,000
Friends Across the Sea is a textbook that offers Israeli and North American schools an established framework to exercise school twinning along with teaching Jewish peoplehood and Jewish identity. It is implemented in 5th and 6th grades and is in an important enhancement to the existing gesher chai between Handiv and the OJCS. Our schools are working with this program

CAPACITY BUILDING

1. Mamanet $15,000
Known to many Canadians as newcomb ball, Mament is a new Israeli women’s sports league that focuses on exercise, bonds between women, female empowerment, socialization, and a desire to make a difference in local communities. Hundreds of women in the North play weekly and this has contributed significantly to creating a strong social network among isolated, largely rural woman.

2. Medical Food regional initiative $47,555 NEW
4 years ago, our partnership was instrumental in opening a 5th medical school in Israel in the North, a true-game changer for the region, bringing better healthcare to Northern residents and a well-educated populace to live in the periphery. The partnership is now investing in a new potential game-changer, medical foods. The area's agricultural activities are currently valued at more than 7.1 billion NIS per annum. It boasts unique training programs for farmers, well developed academic and research institutions with strong life sciences, biotechnology, environmental sciences, computer science and agricultural departments, applied research that is internationally recognized as a hub of agro-innovation with highly interdisciplinary expertise in plant sciences, chemistry, computational chemistry, biochemistry and microbiology and the new Medical School that conducts metabolic research. In other words, the region is perfect to seed (pun intended) a project that brings together science and agriculture in the burgeoning field of medical foods.
Already, a number of organizations in Winnipeg has expressed an interest in this project, including professors in the Dept. of Agriculture at the University of Manitoba. We expect interest to grow over time and expand the relationship between this project and our community.

3. Green Farms $28,150 NEW
Agriculture forms a substantial part of the economy in the North and there is a long-standing concern over the excessive use of pesticide in farms surrounding villages and kibbutzim. This project aims to provide much needed information and education to farmers on alternatives to using toxic pesticides.
