CEO Email February 2016

.

Dear Friends,

We are so fortunate to have such a generous community! We have a lot to celebrate. On September 1, 2015 we launched the annual CJA campaign and on January 27, 2016 we reached the campaign goal of $5,750,000. We will continue the momentum for two more months when campaign closes. If you have not given yet, please consider a donation to CJA.  >Donate online.  Our beneficiary agencies are counting on it! We could not have done this without the support of our donors and the untiring efforts of many dedicated volunteers! As CEO of the Jewish Federation, I am humbled and honoured to thank you.

I am excited to report on a pilot program that we have just launched to engage newcomers in our community. We are reaching out and asking if they would like to get involved, what interests them, and about their experience as they settle in Winnipeg. This initiative crosses a number of departments: YAD (Young Adult Division), Engagement and Campaign.

The Community Planning Committee, charied by Carol Duboff, is gearing up to launch a broad based visioning and community planning process that will consult widely with partner agencies, other Jewish organizations, and community members.

Community Relations, chaired by Joel Lazer, has been meeting with prospective candidates for the upcoming provincial elections. We hosted Colonel Adam Sussman from Israel Defense on February 3 and the final touches have been made to the Norway House Cree Nation Mission to Israel, departing February 21.

The GrowWinnipeg committee has been reinstated under the guidance of Chair Brian Scharfstein. More details to come.

This year, YOUR support has provided assistance for projects and programs locally, nationally and in Israel. Some examples are:

Israel

  • Scholarships that enable more students to attend the Tel Hai College near the Israel/Lebanon border (the only college in Israel that is inclusive of the needs of students with learning disabilities)
  • Sending young adults on Birthright trips (Registration is now open. More than 30 young adults have signed up already. Be sure to register today!)

National

  • CIJA (Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs), the advocacy arm for the Jewish Federations of Canada, whose priorities include human rights, religious freedom, social justice, national security, foreign affairs, and Canada-Israel relations as well as Hillel
