Since 1953, the Jewish National Fund has recognized individuals and organizations of distinction every year upon with whom it has bestowed its highest honour, that of Negev Gala Honouree. This group includes public servants, business leaders, philanthropists, community activists, and religious leaders. They all share a deep commitment to the State of Israel and a desire to enhance and enrich the lives of its citizens.

Our Negev Gala Honoree for 2021 is Dr. Ted Lyons, a globally renowned expert and author of many articles, chapters, and books in the field of radiology. He is a pioneer in Ultrasound research and his groundbreaking work has helped make ultrasound technology one of modern medicine's most widely used diagnostic tools. Dr. Lyons has received the Officer of the Order of Canada (O.C.) and the University of Manitoba Distinguished Alumni Award for Lifetime Achievement. Beyond his scientific contributions, Ted is a philanthropist and a public-servant. He has served in numerous leading roles at the University of Manitoba, the Jewish community, professional organizations and within our JNF community.

As a scholar and autodidact Ted Lyons’ interest in education both as a professional and as a philanthropist, inspired him to choose a “life-changing project” the JNF Canada House in Sderot (Beit KKL JNF Canada House).  JNF Canada house is a unique project to encourage excellence and help address the inequalities between youth in the periphery regions of Israel and those in the center of the country, by providing them with a fortified engaging learning hub and an inviting "second home" atmosphere to create a healthy and safe after school learning environment.
